Gave it a red hot go. Blender 2.74, inspired by the BEER guys developing a new NPR system for Blender. Simple meshes, build modifiers, rendered in Freestyle. I have a job coming up that I'll be using the Freestyle renderer for mostly and it produces some really excellent quality at very low render times.
